St. Mary's hosted a evening of celebration in St. Olcan's Parish Centre on Friday 20th May to celebrate the election of club member Michael Hasson as President of Ulster GAA. Fellow Gaels from across Antrim and Ulster gathered to recount stories of their encounters with Michael from his playing and refereeing days and service on committees in Rasharkin, South West Antrim, County and more recently at Ulster level. All the guests speaking noted that while Michael was mild mannered in his dealings, he had unerring judgement and a talent for getting things done no matter what level he served.
Family members including daughter Joanne and elder brother Pat also congratulated Michael on his new role, with daughter Joanne speaking of her father's lifelong love of Gaelic Games. She recollected fond memories of attending games with her father over the years with a Minor Championship game against Cargin being a particular favourite.
Michael himself thanked St. Mary's for hosting tonight's event, and in particular the guests who had assembled in Rasharkin to share their memories. Michael told those gathered of how honoured he was to be President of Ulster GAA, and spoke of his aims to place the clubs and their volunteers at the heart of everything Ulster GAA would be doing during his tenure. He also took the opportunity to thank his wife Noeleen for her support over the years, and praised her hard work in raising their 8 children.
St. Mary's would like to thank everyone who came to St.Olcan's to join in their celebrations of Michael's achievement, in particular those from other clubs and counties who made the effort to attend the evening. We would also like to thank anyone who helped make Friday's event such a success, including our organisers, those who promoted the event, the tea ladies who ensured everyone received a warm welcome to Rasharkin and also the committee in the Parish Hall for their help ensuring the night was a success.
