North Antrim Weekend of Hurling Big Success once again!
22nd August 2016

Throughout the year, the North Antrim School of Excellence squads trained regularly once a month which began back in November running through August 2016.  The aim was, as before to promote Hurling and further develop our young players within North Antrim from U10 to U13 level.  Quite a number of matches where arranged for the teams throughout the year in preparation for the festival of Hurling.  No one can truly understand what being a team mentor entails these days unless you have done it yourself so a big credit for the preparation of these squads must in particular go to the team mentors and the coaches, also their parents and the players themselves, well done everyone!

Following on from the success of last year, the North Antrim Festival of Hurling returned once again to the Glens of Antrim running over Saturday 13th / Sunday 14th August.  With the number of teams in attendance the event was spread across Armoy, Ballycaslte, Dunloy and Loughguile for the 10 to U13 age groups with each venue hosting a particular age group as before.  Teams once again where invited from up all across Ireland, North and South for the 2-day event.

This year we held all the finals in Ballycastle with the help of Cloney Independent Flute Band from Ahoghill who paraded the teams who took part over the weekend around the Ballycastle pitch followed by Amhrán na bhFiann to get the finals started.  Antrim joint-manager Dominic McKinley presented the winners of the U10, U11 and U12 sections with their trophies and winners medals.  Mary Forsythe presented the Arthur Forsythe Cup to the U13 winners.

The talent and determination the young lads showed over the weekend provided a very entertaining weekend of Hurling across all venues and it’s a credit to themselves plus their coaches.

Teams who took part in the weekend where; Antrim Glens, Clonmel, Craughwell, Glynn Barntown, Kilmacud Crokes, Naas, North Antrim, O'Loughlin Gaels, Slaughtneil, South Antrim and South Derry.  North Antrim thanks you all very much for coming and here’s hoping we will see you all again in the very near future.

The winners from each section where as follows:

  Under 10:  Antrim Glens
  Under 11:  Kilmacud Crokes
  Under 12:  South Derry
  Under 13:  North Antrim

A special mention to the host clubs - their hospitality over the whole weekend was superb with visiting clubs all commenting as such.  North Antrim would also like to thank all the clubs taking part, mentors, parents, players, photographers, tea ladies, referees and anyone else we have missed thank you all very much.
