North Antrim GAA Chairman Owen Elliott addressed the gathering thanking members of the North Antrim Board, the various clubs present, the parents and most important the big number of young Hurlers present on the night. It was great to see so many numbers out making the presentation dinner one of the biggest in many years.
The Chairman thanked the Central Bar for the warm reception, wonderful meal and service.
He explained below the covers in North Antrim there is a group of core people known as the North Antrim Board along with himself who keep things moving. The Chairman explained a bit about each of them namely; Secretary Frank McCarry, Treasurer Chris Campbell, Fixtures Secretary Ali McCabbridge, Referees Secretary Mark O’Neill, Public Relations Officer Ciaran Hasson, Youth Development Officer Paddy Gray, County Delegate Sean McKendry, Cultural Officer James Gaston and their roles within North Antrim. The Chairman thanked them greatly for their efforts throughout the year.
Referees like in many places is now becoming a crisis point and we will at looking this again in the incoming year to see how we can strengthen and increase our existing pool of referees within North Antrim.
The Chairman thanked all the volunteers within North Antrim who helped at the various events, tournaments, teams etc. over the course of the year.
He congratulated all the clubs who won awards on the night and explained next year is a new year and we need to keep pushing our standards higher yet again. It was great to see such a spread of clubs within our competitions with over 900 fixtures played by March alone from the Indoor and Airborne Hurling Leagues (U8 – U14). The U8 / U10 Blitz’s continued again starting from the summer months on Sunday mornings continuing from strength to strength prompting Hurling at this young age. He encouraged keeping these Blitz’s fun, enjoyable and keeping the silent side-lines as sometimes a few things can take away what these Blitzes are really about.
Feis na nGleann was once again held in Loughgiel Shamrocks and was a great success. The Chairman thanked all club members of Loughgiel Shamrocks for their effort and making a fabulous weekend. Somehow, they even managed to secure the weather for most of the weekend.
The success with the North Antrim School of Excellence Squads and Festival of Hurling has established itself as one of the premier competitions. The amount of work that goes into this is unbelievable and the standard of Hurling every year has been going up to such a degree that clubs from all over Ireland are making enquiries looking to join this yearly competition. This needs to be encouraged and promoted in every way as it shows clubs within Antrim they are very capable of competing against other clubs from around Ireland.
Finally, the Chairman said it would be remiss of himself not to mention Dunloy Cuchullains who have won the County Minor, U21 and Senior Championships this year. This is truly a magnificent achievement with it being down to the hard work and dedication of the mentors, players and all the clubs.
The North Antrim Chairman finished off by thanking our sponsors TeamKit Ballymena and the Central Bar and to all the clubs wishing them a successful 2018 on and off the field.
