This weekend sees Loughgiel kick off their centenary celebrations with the Liam McGarry Memorial Cup. Liam McGarry had a lifetime involvement with Loughgiel Hurling Club, winning six senior championships as a player. He also played for Ulster Railway Cup teams and Antrim County teams, winning All-Ireland "Home” final medals in 1959 and 1963. In 1963 he captained both Antrim and Loughgiel winning teams and in 1983 he was a selector on the Loughgiel team that won the All-Ireland Club Championship for the first time.
Liam attended hurling matches all over Ireland, including fifty two successive All Ireland finals, most of the football finals and county and provincial championship matches. He rarely missed a Loughgiel match in hurling or camogie at any age group. His involvement with the club continued until his sudden death in January 2005, aged 71. A few months earlier he took great pride as being manager of the Loughgiel team which won the Antrim Junior hurling Championship.
Since claiming our second All-Ireland in 2012, Loughgiel GAC are now in a privileged position, where southern teams are prepared to travel north to play challenge games. This weekend sees former Kilkenny champions, O’Loughlin Gaels, and former Offaly champions, St Rynagh’s, whom Loughgiel beat in the 1983 Club final. Completing the line-up is our neighbours and fierce rivals, Dunloy.
Loughgiel GAC would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Cork legend, Justin McCarthy to our centenary weekend. As many people will know Justin has a strong affinity with Antrim hurling, going back to the 1970s. Justin has kindly offered to share his wealth of knowledge and experience with our coaches. Over the weekend he will deliver a series of coaching sessions as well as a question and answer seminar with the mentors of all our teams.
